I just finished reading Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler. It was great–chilling and terrifying, but great.

The story follows the journey of Lauren Olamina as her life in a dystopian 2020-ish California steadily unravels from something that bears a semblance of normalcy into a struggle to survive.

One thing I noticed and admired when I read Butler’s novel Kindred is her ability to evoke terror. Reading both novels, I had a sense of always wanting to look over my shoulder, not knowing what the next moment might bring. It’s like J-Horror, but in a book. Brilliant writing.

My favorite line: No one should travel alone in this world.

Anybody read this book? What’d you think?
