All writers should put conscious, detailed thought and planning into the structure of their stories. Whether it’s a few hundred words or a few thousands, fiction or creative nonfiction, the frame upon which you build your story is as important as the foundation of a house (did I just mix some metaphors? Oh well.). Anyway, screenwriters know this. While some of them are unimaginative (read: formulaic) with the stories they tell, those who are successful do a great job at mixing a unique vision with a solid structure. While many of their rules are specific to screenwriting, a lot are applicable to storytelling in any medium.

So, check out this great series on story structure from the Unknown Screenwriter.
